My 2019 Oscar Predictions: Who Should Win, Who I Want to Win and Who Will Win

***all of these are opinion based*** duh

I don’t know about you but I’m finding that this year’s awards season have been very sporadic so far. There have been more snubs and surprises that have baffled me to the point where I legitimately have no 100% clue who will actually win. Also not to mention that the entire Oscar lineup is very underwhelming this year. There hasn’t been a movie this year that I LOVED entirely with all my heart or am dying to see win because it truly deserves it. That being said, I am in no way bashing that any of the nominated films don’t deserve the honor, it’s just a weird fluke year for movies. Maybe because last year was full of incredible cinematic masterpieces that blew me away and it was hard to top that. Here are my personal predictions for the categories of my choice (who will win, should win, and who I want to win in parentheses) for tonight’s telecast:

(* denotes a movie I did not see so my opinion will not be as valid)

Best Picture:

Black Panther

BlacKkKlansman (WANT TO WIN)

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Favourite

Green Book (WANT TO WIN)

A Star is Born

BlacKkKlansman and Green Book were hands down my favorite movies of 2018. There was absolutely nothing in those films that I didn’t like or enjoy watching. However, I am proud of myself that this year I almost made it to catching all Best Picture nominees (Vice, I’m sorry but I have no interest in seeing you lol). Those two films, especially Green Book, have been the only movies I’ve recommended (and annoyed about) to my friends and family this year. As much as I wanted to love it, I just didn’t like the Favourite as much as I expected. I probably need to watch a few more times to understand some parts better but it did not “wow” me. Bohemian Rhapsody I loved! One last note regarding Marvel’s most successful film to date, it blows my mind that Black Panther is getting so much hate just because it was nominated for an Oscar despite all the praise it got when it first came out…let that sink in.

Best Actor:

Christian Bale, Vice*

Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born (SHOULD WIN)

Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate*

Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody (WILL WIN, WANT TO WIN)

Viggo Mortenson, Green Book

Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine is hands down the greatest performance he has ever put out in this career, I refuse to let anyone tell me otherwise. Out of his incredible versatile and plenty of Oscar-nominated performances, nothing has blown me more away than his portrayal (and singing!!!) of this remake since Silver Lining’s Playbook. With that being said, his chances of winning are slim since typically, the winner of the Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA have all gone on to win the Oscar; all of which Rami Malek has won. I am rooting for Rami to win but if either he or Bradley take home the golden statuette, I’ll be satisfied.

Best Actress:

Yalitza Aparicio, Roma

Olivia Colman, The Favourite (WANT TO WIN)

Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Is this even a competition? Yes, this is an incredibly competitive category but all in all, the true winner tonight will be Glenn Close for her FINALLY receiving her delayed and deserved Oscar. Is this the right role for her to have won it? Debateable but given what the Academy did with Julianne Moore in 2015, they will probably just give it to Glenn because she’s been nominated numerous times before. I also want to mention and acknowledge how much Melissa McCarthy blew me away in her dramatic role as the late Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Coming from somewhere being known for her comedic roles in Mike and Molly, Bridesmaids and Spy, Melissa surely is an incredibly versatile actress who is able to portray such a terrible human on screen in a way where you feel bad for her. I’m excited to see what else she takes on along with Lady Gaga’s long acting career ahead of her if she decides to keep heading in that direction. Go Yalitzia as well, Viva la Mexico!

Best Supporting Actor:

Mahershala Ali, Green Book (WILL WIN)

Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman (WANT TO WIN)

Sam Elliot, A Star is Born

Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me? (SHOULD WIN)

Sam Rockwell, Vice*

As much as I adored Adam Driver’s performance in BlacKkKlansman, it either will Mahershala Ali or Richard E. Grant. That’s pretty much all I have to say about this category.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Best Supporting Actress:

Amy Adams, Vice*

Marina de Tavira, Roma (WANT TO WIN)

Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk (WILL WIN, SHOULD WIN)

Emma Stone, The Favourite

Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

Okay first and foremost, I screamed when they announced Marina’s name during the nominations like, holy cow! She has been my underrated favorite all season! What a shock as well since she has been ignored by all the other award shows this year. But the real winner tonight will be Queen Regina King for her well deserved Oscar. Even during the trailer, you just knew that she was going for the GOLD.

Best Director:

Alfonso Cuaron, Roma (WILL WIN)

Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War*

Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite (SHOULD WIN)

Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman (WANT TO WIN)

Adam McKay, Vice*

I really want Spike Lee (as well as BlacKkKlasman in general) to finally win something!! this award is most likely going to be once again awarded to Alfonso Cuaron. Spike, if you’re reading this, you’re an amazing filmmaker who really knows how to tell a story through the lens of a camera along with moving my cold little heart to tears. You rock.

Adapted Screenplay:

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs*

BlacKkKlansman (WANT TO WIN)

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

If Beale Street Could Talk (SHOULD WIN, WILL WIN)

A Star is Born

Original Screenplay:

The Favourite (SHOULD WIN, WILL WIN)

First Reformed*

Green Book (WANT TO WIN)

Other Oscar standouts that I saw and am rooting for: Shoplifters (Best Foreign Language Film), RBG (Best Documentary Feature), & “Shallow” (Best Original Song, A Star is Born)

Oscar snubs I am salty about: Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place, supporting actress), Toni Collette (Hereditary, lead actress), Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born, best director), Nicole Kidman (Boy Erased, supporting actress), Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy, supporting actor), Three Identical Strangers (Best Documentary Feature), Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (Best Documentary Feature), Charlize Theron (Tully, leading actress), “Revelation” (Best Original Song, Boy Erased), Eighth Grade getting any recognition, First Man (Best Original Score).
